Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Tottenham have now opened talks and made an enquiry to sign Leicester City playmaker James Maddison this summer – a player that Arsenal are also supposedly interested in.

Maddison, 25, enjoyed a wonderful season for the Foxes last season – having a hand in 30 goals during 52 games. Finding the back of the net 18 times, the England midfielder also laid on 12 assists. But his future is in doubt.

The ex-Norwich ace has entered the final two years of his contract at the King Power. The Telegraph report that Leicester may have to sell players, with their wage ratio in comparison to turnover deemed unsustainable.

A disappointing season last term means a high earner or two may have to be sold this summer. Since that report, transfer expert Jones says he has been told that Spurs have opened talks and made an enquiry for Maddison.

“I’m told Spurs have touched base over Maddison and a deal would not be impossible but it would cost them a lot of money. Probably more than they would want to spend. But you never know, the door isn’t closed.”

What a signing Maddison would be for Spurs. While they do not play with a no.10 in Conte’s 3-4-3 system – it might see him revert to his Inter formation. A 3-4-1-2 system. A no.10 playing behind Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Maddison would be a stunning addition for Spurs. He would give them that creative edge in the final third, and adds another jigsaw piece on their way to finally ending the hunt for silverware. But Jones is right.

The stumbling block is, Leicester’s asking price. Would Spurs want to pay £60million? They have already blown well over £100million – only selling Steven Bergwijn in return. Perhaps instalments, or a swap, could make it cheaper.
