Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder has told ESPN that he fears Antony leaving ‘wouldn’t be good’ for his Eredivisie outfit, amid interest from Liverpool and Manchester United this summer.

The Dutch giants have already lost a host of their leading lights in the off-season. Lisandro Martinez has moved to Old Trafford, while Sebastien Haller joined Borussia Dortmund and Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui both secured transfers to Bayern Munich, so far.

Erik ten Hag has returned to raid the Amsterdam natives by signing Martinez, and courting a deal for Antony, since taking charge of the Red Devils. But a deal for the latter has so far failed to materialise as Schreuder strives to deny his predecessor a star attacking weapon.

Antony dazzled in the Dutch top-flight under Ten Hag last season as the 22-year-old hit the net eight times and created a further four over 23 games. He also struck another two goals and four assists in seven Champions League ties, plus two and two in two KNVB Beker ties.

The Sao Paulo product’s performances additionally convinced Tite to give Antony his Brazil debut in October. He has since gone on to record nine caps with his country with two goals and two assists, despite only starting two times, and is yet to taste an international defeat.

Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in transfer for Antony of Ajax

Liverpool and Manchester United have taken note of Antony’s efforts in Amsterdam, and have explored his transfer from Ajax with Jurgen Klopp and Ten Hag keen to bring him to the Premier League. But no deal for the Sao Palou native has yet emerged following talks.

Reports by Goal claim the Red Devils would be prepared to pay £51m to secure Antony’s services this year. His agents also travelled to Europe during June to accelerate talks. Yet despite confidence in the Old Trafford hierarchy, have not managed to find an agreement.

Liverpool have also held talks with Ajax over Klopp’s interest in the right-sided, left-footed winger, per Jorge Nicola. But de Godenzonen would want at least €80m (£68m) to release the 5 ft 7 dynamo from his contract, which is not due to expire until the summer of 2025.

Schreuder fears Antony exit ‘wouldn’t be good’ for Ajax this summer

Schreuder is loath to see Antony leave Ajax, amid interest from Liverpool and Manchester United, given the players he has already lost this summer. The Johan Cruyff Arena boss is also confident of retaining the Brazilian, despite the influx of options he has so far added.

“I really think he will stay,” Schreuder said. “Of course, we have sold a lot of players now. That has not happened in recent years. We have also bought players. But we have sold so many players that I assume nobody will leave.”

Schreuder added that he has not set any deadlines for players to seal transfers away from Amsterdam this summer. But the Ajax boss would fear the impact of any more departures.

“No, we did not discuss that,” he noted. “But we do talk to each other daily. I assume that no one is leaving. If we sell one more key player, it wouldn’t be good for us.”
