Tony Cascarino has told talkSPORT that he expects Arsenal to sack Mikel Arteta at the end of the term if the Spaniard cannot get the north London club into the Champions League.

The Gunners fell at the final hurdle in their bid to take a top-four Premier League finish last season. Tottenham Hotspur pipped their fierce rivals to the final qualification place for the top UEFA tournament by two points, after both sides finished with 22 wins from 38 games.

Straight defeats to Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton in April and losing to Tottenham and Newcastle United in May proved costly for Arteta’s team. Any win from one of those five fixtures could have swung the pendulum decisively in Arsenal’s way.

Arsenal have backed Arteta significantly in the transfer market to add the last pieces of the puzzle to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2016. The Gunners paid out £145m on new players last summer and have already spent £115m so far this summer.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is the latest player to join Arsenal after giving up Champions League football with Manchester City for £32m. The Ukraine international follows his former City teammate Gabriel Jesus in moving to north London, following the Brazilian’s £45m switch.

Arteta will hope Arsenal can now utilise Zinchenko and Jesus’ Premier League title-winning experience to now qualify for the Champions League. A goal that Cascarino hints will hang around the Spaniard’s neck all season, and could cost him his job without a top-four result.

“If you look at the top six, the two that don’t get in the top four this season their managers will lose their jobs, without a doubt,” Cascarino said. “If Arsenal don’t make it, Arteta will lose his job.

“I think he’s done everything he can to make his team as competitive as possible, but you now have to make the top four. Unless they only narrowly miss out… but it would have to be the smallest margins or a dramatic end [to save him].

“Performances week-in, week-out will also count because that will affect the feeling at the club. I went to a couple of games at the Emirates at the end of the season, and it was rocking. People called it a library, but it was rocking at the end of the season.”

Arsenal have not finished in the top-four of the Premier League table and qualified for the Champions League since 2015/16. The Gunners finished as runners-up to Leicester City for the title six years ago, before taking fifth, sixth, fifth, eighth, eighth and fifth-place results.
