If you’re in love with all things horror then this series has some seriously sinister stories in store.

American Horror Stories is an anthology series created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, serving as the third instalment of the American Story franchise. However, it’s a direct spin-off from the iconic American Horror Story.

Season 2 began premiering on Thursday, July 21st, 2022 and audiences have already been compelled to reminisce about the show that started it all. The premiere episode – titled Dollhouse – features a character you may find familiar. Spalding is played by Denis O’Hare and his inclusion dates back to season 3 of the original series, Coven.

Taking a trip down memory lane, who is Spalding in American Horror Story?

Who is Spalding in American Horror Story?

Spalding was introduced in American Horror Story: Coven in 2013 as a mute butler harboring an obsession with dolls.

Arguably, his defining characteristic is his unwavering loyalty to Fiona (played by Jessica Lange). He’s in love with her and even goes as far as to help her murder the Supreme – Anna Leigh Leighton, played by Christine Ebersole – as well as Emma Roberts’ Madison.

In a startling sequence, Myrtle (Frances Conroy) attempts to get Spalding to confess by putting a spell on his tongue. Only able to speak the truth, he cements his loyalty by chopping it off.

It doesn’t exactly work out though because Zoe (Taissa Farmiga) makes sure the tongue can speak whether it’s attached to Spalding or not. His own tongue betrays him and Zoe murders him accordingly once the truth has been unearthed.

Nevertheless, he lingers as a ghost in Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies.

Of the many things we learn from Coven, it’s that Spalding boasts quite the collection of unsettling dolls. That brings us neatly into the American Horror Stories era…

Spalding in American Horror Stories Dollhouse explained

The Spalding character in American Horror Stories season 2’s first episode – Dollhouse – is portrayed by Denis O’Hare again but he’s not the same character from Coven.

Dollhouse’s Spalding is eventually revealed to be the father of Spalding from Coven.

Diving into the 2022 episode, Distractify reports that he is the boss of a doll factory in 1961. He abducts young women and makes them compete to be his ideal partner. However, Coby (Kristine Froseth), discovers a way for her and others to escape his clutches.

Notably, they’ve formed a connection to Spalding’s son so Coby tries to save him. She’s then trapped but rescued by witches who attend… have you guessed it? None other than Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Women.

Accompanied by the witches, Coby and the son are welcomed into the academy and we meet Myrtle when she was younger. As you’ll know, Spalding’s son simply adopts his father’s name and grows up to become the man we meet in Coven.

Denis O’Hare should be familiar

It’s likely that you’ve seen the 60-year-old American actor outside of the American Horror Story franchise.

He’s been in such movies as The Goldfinch (Lucius), Swallow (Erwin), and Dallas Buyers Club (Dr. Sevard).

On the other hand, other TV work includes The Nevers (Dr. Edmund Hague), American Gods (Tyr), Big Little Lies (Ira Farber), This Is Us (Jessie), and the vampire Russell Edgington in True Blood.
