*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Virgin River season 4*

The appearance of Denny is one of the biggest talking points in Virgin River season 4 as he arrives in town claiming to be the grandson of Dr Vernon Mullins.

Suspicion quickly arises around Denny, however, as his claims of being Doc’s grandson are challenged by Muriel while Lizzie also questions why he keeps pushing her away despite them both clearly liking each other.

As season 4 of Virgin River progresses, matters take an even more puzzling turn when Lizzie finds a bottle of pills in Denny’s room that are prescribed to Ryan Cutler, a character who hasn’t been mentioned previously.

Naturally, curious Virgin River fans have wasted no time in asking who this mystery character is.

Lizzie’s suspicious find

In episode 7 of Virgin River season 4, Denny invites Lizzie round for dinner after the pair shared a kiss at the Renaissance Faire in the previous episode.

While Denny is preparing the food, he asks Lizzie to grab his phone charger from his room so that he can check in with Hope.

As Lizzie searches the desk in his room, she discovers a bottle of clonazepam pills (branded as Klonopin) that are prescribed to someone named Ryan Cutler, a character who hasn’t been mentioned in Virgin River up to now.

She doesn’t mention anything to Denny but in the following episode, she passes on the suspicious find to Doc, who had already confronted Denny about breaking into the clinic’s medicine cabinet at the end of episode 5.

Who is Ryan Cutler in Virgin River?

Ryan Cutler is Denny’s late father.

We never meet Ryan in Virgin River as he died a month before Denny’s arrival in the town and the subsequent events of season 4.

As Denny is claiming to be Doc’s grandson, this also means that Ryan would technically be Doc’s son too.

In the first episode of season 4, Denny explains that he is the grandson of Rose Miller, a woman who Doc dated during college before they broke off their relationship when Vernon enrolled in med school.

What Rose failed to mention, however, was that she was apparently pregnant at the time of their breakup, and she later went on to give birth to Ryan without Doc’s knowledge.

How did Ryan Cutler die?

Ryan Cutler died of Huntington’s disease.

Huntington’s disease is a degenerative condition that stops parts of the brain working properly over time and is usually fatal after a period of up to 20 years.

It’s revealed in the finale of Virgin River season 4 that Denny has also been diagnosed with the illness as Huntington’s disease is usually inherited from a person’s parents.

According to the UK’s NHS website, Huntington’s can cause difficulty concentrating, memory lapses, depression and mood swings. While it can also cause difficulty moving, breathing and speaking in its later stages.

The bottle of clonazepam that Lizzie found, was originally prescribed to Ryan Cutler but Denny has been taking the pills himself to alleviate his symptoms as the drug is used to prevent and control seizures and panic attacks by calming the brain and nerves according to WebMD.

Denny’s illness is also the reason why he keeps pushing Lizzie away as he doesn’t want to hurt her as his condition continues to worsen.
