The trailer for Wakanda Forever has dropped, and fans are already shedding tears at what promises to be an emotional watch as the characters deal with the loss of T’Challa.

The titular role, Black Panther, was played by Chadwick Boseman, who tragically passed away in August 2020. The trailer focuses on the women of Wakanda as they fight to protect their nation following T’Challa’s death.

No Woman No Cry, the song featured in the trailer, has been a focal point of conversation over the past few days, as fans deem the song the perfect anthem for the film, which is set to hit theatres in November.

What is the song in the Wakanda Forever trailer?

The song featured in the Wakanda Forever trailer is No Woman No Cry, originally by Bob Marley and The Wailers but covered by Tems. No Woman No Man then transitions to Kendrick Lamar’s Alright.

Marley released the song in 1974 on the studio album Natty Dread. It has been covered by artists such as Nina Simone, The Fugees, Boney M, and now Tems.

Tems has spoken about her love for Bob Marley’s music before, and in a recent interview with Billboard she said if she could remix a song it would be “Is This Love or No Woman Don’t Cry because those are one of my favourites.”

Who is Tems?

Tems is an artist who first rose to fame after featuring on WizKid’s 2020 song Essence. It became the first Nigerian song in history to make it onto the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Tems is originally from Lagos, but was raised in the UK, Lekki, and Ajah.

In 2020 she released an EP titled For Broken Ears, and dropped another one called If Orange Was A Place in 2021.

Speaking about her music to NME, Tems said in a 2021 interview: “I’m always telling my story in my songs. From the first song I ever made to the music I’m making today, all the songs I put out are just pieces and moments in time. I’m just sharing music that reflects my life at that moment, and that will never change.”

Twitter reacts to No Woman No Cry

As the trailer for Wakanda Forever dropped, fans couldn’t help but discuss Tems’ cover of No Woman No Cry.

One person wrote: “Aye that transition from No Woman, No Cry into Kendrick’s Alright was literally perfect.”

Another tweeted: “I need that Tems cover of “No Woman, No Cry” from the Wakanda Forever trailer immediately.”

Fans shared their appreciation of the music in the trailer, with many pointing out the poignance of the mash up of the two songs and the powerful effect this has.

“‘No woman no cry’ is a song of hope & resilience for Black women. “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar is a song of perseverance and liberation for the Black community. The way the trailer to #WakandaForever wove these songs together was so powerful and I can’t stop thinking about it,” a Twitter user said.
