As the Tory leadership contest between Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss progresses, we’re continuing to explore the lives and careers of the two candidates and those close to them. So, what is the chosen religion of former chancellor Rishi Sunak – is he a Hindu?

What is Rishi Sunak’s religion?

Having been born in Southampton in 1980, to parents with a Punjabi heritage. Sunak has been open about his cultural heritage and his religion on a number of occasions.

Rishi Sunak is a Hindu, meaning he subscribes to the religion of Hinduism.

Hinduism is the largest religion in India and the third largest religion in the world, with 1.2 billion people being said to practice the faith.

In an interview with Business Standard in 2015, Sunak discussed his identity:

“I am thoroughly British, this is my home and my country, but my religious and cultural heritage is Indian, my wife is Indian. I am open about being a Hindu”.

His Business Standard interview also revealed that Sunak does not eat beef. As is generally custom with practising Hindus, the potential PM in waiting is also teetotal.

Sunak’s Parliamentary oath

The ‘Oath of Allience’ is a promise that must be made by every Member of Parliament, new or returning, when they take their seat – either after an election, by-election or following the passing of a monarch.

MPs are given a standard set of words which they are to recite, affirming their commitment to the Queen and the state. While doing so, they are free to hold any sacred text of their choosing. It may be a copy of the Bible, Quaran, etc.

Following the 2019 General Election, when Sunak was the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, he held up a copy of the ‘Bhagwad Gita’. It is a Hindu holy scripture, once again displaying his proud commitment to the Hindu faith.

Then British cabinet minister Alok Sharma also swore on the Bhagwad Gita, in what was said to be the most diverse mix of Parliamentarians ever – with no less than 65 non-white MPs.

Sunak – a possible history maker

If Sunak is elected to be the leader of the Conservative party and, subsequently the UK’s next Prime Minister – he would be making history.

While the Parliament frequently returns a number of minority ethnic MPs, Number 10 Downing Street is not famed for its diversity.

In the modern era, there has been no minority ethnic Prime Ministers. Should Rishi Sunak be elected come September 5th, he would be the first Hindu and first ethnic minority PM since Benjamin Disraeli in the 19th century, according to reports.

Ballots are currently open for Conservative Party members, and the public should learn of the outcome of the race between Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak in early September.
