West Ham are reportedly one of a number of clubs that want to sign Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer – a player Hammers legend Joe Cole said is nearly impossible to catch because of his “pace and power”.

Chelsea academy product Hudson-Odoi, 21, was left out of the matchday squad by Thomas Tuchel on Saturday – during a 1-0 win over Everton. He has entered the final two years of his deal and is keen to go and get game time.

Ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, the three-time England international will be looking at a move to get the game time necessary to break back into Gareth Southgate’s side. He has 38 goal involvements in 126 Chelsea appearances.

Reports this week state that West Ham are one of a number of clubs interested. Everton, Newcastle, Crystal Palace, too. Speaking about Hudson-Odoi as quoted by Chelsea’s site in 2019, Cole says his pace makes him impossible to catch.

“I actually trained with Callum when I was coming back from America. He actually stood me up a couple of times! You can’t catch him – with that pace and power, there’s nothing you can do. He’s a great player. He can get even better.”

West Ham want to sign Hudson-Odoi: Cole said he is impossible to catch

The £120,000-a-week winger needs a move from Chelsea. Not least because of his World Cup claims, but simply because he is at an important stage in his development and he needs to begin to turn potential into quality.

A move to a Premier League club that are in the top half and chasing European football is worthy of Hudson-Odoi’s quality. So, West Ham would be ideal. The likes of Newcastle would also make sense. West Ham must act fast.

A move to the Hammers would allow Hudson-Odoi to remain in London, his birthplace. Would he start for David Moyes’ side? Without a doubt. That, and West Ham are in Europe, which will surely tempt the England man.
