West Ham United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of £7 million Bordeaux striker Hwang Ui-Jo with L’Equipe claiming that the South Korean has little interest in a move to the MLS.

A couple of weeks ago, the agent of Girondins forward Alberth Elis insisted that his client was ‘obviously’ going to leave the Matmut Atlantique behind after a crisis-hit Bordeaux side were demoted to the third tier of French football as punishment for their grim financial predicament.

Now, Hwang’s camp are yet to break their silence.

But you’d need probably to down every bottle in Wine Country before suggesting that Hwang, alongside Elis, will be sticking around to help Bordeaux climb back up the French football ladder.

The likes of West Ham, Nantes and Portuguese champions FC Porto are all in the running for Hwang’s signature. And, according to L’Equipe, the late-blooming 29-year-old wants to stay this side of the Atlantic.

Hwang, who is valued at around £7 million, has turned down a move to Major League Soccer outfit Minnesota United as he awaits an offer from one of Europe’s top-five leagues.

It is not certain whether West Ham plan to step up their pursuit of Heung-Min Son’s international team-mate.

Hwang scored an impressive 11 goals in 2021/22; A more-than-respectable tally given Bordeaux’s problems on and off the pitch. The 2009 Ligue 1 champions eventually finished rock bottom in 20th spot.

“He has the ability to score,” then-Bordeaux coach Jean-Louis Gasset said of the former Gamba Osaka talisman. “But he can also play anywhere across the front-line.

“He’s very active for a front-line striker. Hwang’s mental ability is also excellent.”

Versatile, hard-working and an emphatic finisher; Hwang certainly ticks a lot of boxes as far as David Moyes is concerned.

The Hammers are prioritising the vastly-more expensive Armando Broja and Gianluca Scamacca as things stand, though both deals are proving to be rather problematic. Scamacca – the subject of a £34 million West Ham bid according to Sassuolo’s CEO – wants to join Paris Saint-Germain instead.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, meanwhile, says there are no plans to let Broja leave on a permanent basis.
