Red Bull Salzburg have made it clear that Benjamin Sesko will not be leaving on the cheap after Fabrizio Romano named Premier League giants Manchester United and Newcastle as two clubs targeting the young striker.

No longer merely the apple of Football Manager aficionado eyes, Sesko is starting to carve out quite the reputation for himself in the real world too.

The 19-year-old will surely be one of the next to drop off Red Bull’s feted production line. Standing at 6ft 4ins, blisteringly quick and with a penchant for ice-cool finishing, Sesko has been labelled the second coming of Erling Haaland for a reason. There are certainly similarities.

“Manchester United are well informed (about) Salzburg target Benjamin Sesko,” Romano wrote on Twitter this weekend.

“He’s one of the players monitered, considered ‘really talented’. But it’s not imminent or advanced as of now. Man United are aware of Sesko, as other clubs are – including Newcastle.”

Is Benjamin Sesko really the next Erling Haaland?

It did not go unnoticed that Sesko’s agent was spotted on Tyneside last week. And while Newcastle have made a ‘number of inquiries’ (Northern Echo), Salzburg are in no rush to sell.

After all, the perennial Austrian champions have already raked in over £60 million this summer via the sales of Karim Adeyemi (Borussia Dortmund), Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen (both Leeds United).

So while a 300 million asking price may have been made with tongues pressed firmly against cheeks, the response to Romano’s tweet from Red Bull Salzburg’s official account highlights the size of the task facing Newcastle and Man United this summer.

“We want 300 million,” Salzburg say, before insisting that Bruno Fernandes should be included as part of what would be a world-record transfer.

“I think it’s normal for the best clubs to follow the best talents. He is one of the best talents in the world at his age,” Sesko’s agent, Elvis Basanovic, said last year.

“Right now, he has everything he needs to develop at Red Bull Salzburg. I think he will stay here for the next two or three years. We don’t need to rush through anything.”

Sesko scored 11 times during his breakthrough campaign at the Red Bull Arena in 2021/22. He also hit the net at a prolific rate during a loan spell at FC Liefering.

“I think he is a very complete striker,” Basanovic adds. “He can score with his head, with his right foot, with his left foot, from inside the area, from distance, after dribbling or completing a team move

“He is very fast. In some games he reaches a speed of over 36km/h (22.3 mp/h). This makes him one of the fastest forwards in the world.”
