Jesse Marsch has backed Rodrigo to hold an ‘important’ role in his Leeds United side after Galatasaray reportedly expressed an interest in the forward’s transfer during recent talks.

Rodrigo has struggled to live up to his price tag since moving to Elland Road from Valencia in 2020 for £26m. Former manager Marcelo Bielsa broke the bank with director of football Victor Orta to bring the Spaniard to England after sealing their Premier League promotion.

The 31-year-old was the marquee addition of Leeds’ first market as a top-flight club for the first time in 16 years. But over 62 appearances for the West Yorkshire outfit, the 27-cap La Roja forward has only offered 13 goals – including two penalties – and three assists so far.

Rodrigo enjoyed almost twice as many Premier League minutes last season as he did in his debut campaign, as well. He featured for 2,268 minutes over 31 games compared to 1,286 over 26. Yet his goal tally fell from seven to six, and laid on one assist after two in 2020/21.

Jesse Marsch states Rodrigo is ‘going to be important’ at Leeds after exit talks

Marsch is convinced Rodrigo can hold a key role at Leeds in the new season and feels the forward knows how highly-rated he is at Elland Road, nonetheless. The Whites boss is now keen to get him in top form after scoring Leeds’ only goal against Crystal Palace on Friday.

“The penalty was shaky in general but Rodrigo knows he’s an important player, knows he’s got a lot of quality,” Marsch said, via quotes by Leeds Live. “In those moments, we all have trust he’s going to step up and bury it, which he did.

“We need him to be at his best. He’s going to be important here and we have to make sure, in every way, he’s engaged and pushing. He’s part of the leadership council, and that can really help.”

Marsch’s praise for Rodrigo will likely rule out a highly questionable transfer to Galatasaray after Takvim reported the Super Lig side informed Leeds of their interest. A move from the Whites to Cimbom was already debatable given the rivalry that exists between the teams.

Dubious Galatasaray transfer now even more unlikely for Rodrigo

Galatasaray were noted to have approached Leeds to discuss Rodrigo’s possible availability as the Istanbul giants sought alternatives to Joao Pedro. The Nef Stadium side were in talks with Cagliari over the 30-year-old switching to Turkey, but he has since joined Fenerbahce.

Cimbom appreciate Rodrigo for his ability to play as a centre-forward, in behind the striker or as a No.10. The reports in Turkey also claimed Leeds could accept just €12m (£10m) for the £57k-a-week attacker, given he now has two years to run on his contract with the club.
