Pep Guardiola has hinted that Manchester City talent Josh Wilson-Esbrand could replace Oleksandr Zinchenko following the Ukrainian international’s move to Arsenal last week.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, the Premier League manager waxed lyrical about the 19-year-old defender’s performances in pre-season, with Wilson-Esbrand featuring for City against Club America and Bayern Munich, with the London-born fullback impressing on both occasions.

Signed from West Ham in 2019, Wilson-Esbrand made his professional debut last season for City in the League Cup against Wycombe Wanderers, with the youngster also going on to make his first appearance for England’s U-20s, and following the sale of Zinchenko for a reported £30m, Guardiola seemingly has plans for the teenager.

This summer has seen numerous talents from the U-23s depart on permanent deals, yet Wilson-Esbrand looks to be staying around ahead of what could be a huge year for the left-back, who can also play in central defender and up in left-midfield if needed.

Whilst City are reportedly pushing hard to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion, Wilson-Esbrand could be an option at left-back for the Premier League champions next season, and according to Guardiola, the Catalan coach has already been impressed with what he has seen from the youngster this summer.

Guardiola said: “We believe he has the potential. He’s so aggressive to win the duels and with the ball is so so clever. The guy has a good one-v-one, doesn’t feel the pressure on the ball. How much our back four will press, he didn’t lose many balls. He played a really good game. If we can control him and avoid injuries, we can have a full-back for many years.”

Wilson-Esbrand could be a City regular in the future but now needs loan move

Very rarely do we see a player from a top Premier League club go straight from the academy to the first-team without some experience out on loan, and for Wilson-Esbrand, this could be the case if the defender is to break into the senior squad at City in the near future.

Indeed, the fullback is highly-rated at the club and could become a regular at City one day, yet with just one senior appearance at the age of 19, Wilson-Esbrand has to be going out on loan next season to gain some valuable experience, something that could push the teenager over the threshold between a talented youth player and someone ready for the first-team.
