Speaking on The Done Deal Show, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has been discussing Arsenal and their recent links to Lucas Paqueta.
There have been plenty of stories doing the rounds about Arsenal and Paqueta as of late, and according to Jacobs, the Gunners have a very real interest in the Brazilian.
However, the reporter is led to believe that Arsenal are yet to make their interest formal. Although he does state that they have been in touch with people close to the player to sound out his interest in a move.
Intriguingly, Jacobs states that Arsenal won’t be moving for Paqueta if he’s not super-keen on a move to the Emirates as they don’t want to get involved in a bidding war for the 24-year-old.
What’s been said?
Jacobs shared what he knows about Paqueta and Arsenal.
“My understanding remains that Arsenal have not bid, there has been no formal offer but the interest is very real,” Jacobs said.
“The challenge is in agreeing a price, although some are out there stating that they may agree a cut-price deal for closer to €50m or £35m, the reality is that Jean-Michel Aulas wants around €60m to €65m, and even then that’s €15m less than Lyon were asking for in January.”
“As of yet, there is nothing advanced, nothing formal around either Arsenal or Newcastle, but what Arsenal are doing in particular is speaking directly to the player’s agent rather than Lyon and that’s to establish if there’s a genuine desire to move to Arsenal.
“If they get that buy-in, they may proceed later in the window, but if they don’t, because they don’t want to be involved in a bidding war, they won’t proceed any further. It’s very early stages. He’s a player Arsenal admire, but there’s nothing from that admiration that has translated into anything formal or advanced at this stage.”

Watch out for Newcastle
Jacobs’ key point here is that Arsenal don’t want to be involved in a bidding war for Paqueta, and if that’s the case, they have to watch out for Newcastle United.
The Magpies have been linked with Paqueta for even longer than Arsenal have, and as the richest club in the world, they can afford to go toe-to-toe with the Gunners for the midfielder’s signature.
Newcastle’s interest may well put Arsenal off bidding for Paqueta, but if they can get assurances from the player that he wants to join the Gunners, this could be a deal that gets the green light.
Keep an eye on this situation as we close in on the final month of the transfer window.
