Monaco summer signing Takumi Minamino has hailed the ‘unforgettable’ time he spent at Liverpool working with boss Jurgen Klopp, after leaving for Ligue 1 on a four-year contract.

The Japan international secured a £15.5m switch to the Principality in June, worth an initial £13m before add-ons. He had signed with the Reds from RB Salzburg two-and-a-half-years earlier for £7.25m, but seldom found regular playing time on Merseyside outside the cups.

Klopp only awarded Minamino 30 of his 55 appearances with Liverpool in Premier League games. The 27-year-old also only opened the action in just five top-flight fixtures, spent 33 as an unused substitute and amassed a total of 704 minutes for four goals and zero assists.

Minamino would offer a much greater impact in League Cup ties, netting six goals and two assists over seven appearances. He also started four of five Carabao Cup appearances last season, yet he still watched the Reds beat Chelsea on penalties in the final from the bench.

Another penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea followed for Liverpool in the 2021/22 FA Cup final, too. But Minamino was again not in the matchday squad after missing the semi-final win over Manchester City, despite his crucial two goals to beat Norwich City in fifth-round.

The 42-cap winger also hit home to help the Reds beat Cardiff City 3-1 in the fourth-round with his first FA Cup goal. Minamino made a total of eight FA Cup outings for Liverpool, as well as turning out in nine – starting four times – of a potential 20 Champions League ties.

Minamino hails ‘unforgettable’ Liverpool time with Klopp after signing for Monaco

Minamino will now hope to help Monaco into the Champions League after signing for the Ligue 1 side from Liverpool. Les Monegasques enter the UEFA tournament in the qualifying stages against PSV Eindhoven on August 2, before starting the league term at Strasbourg.

But Minamino will not forget his Anfield adventure, having relished a chance to play under Liverpool boss Klopp. He will also recollect fondly on the players he featured beside in red.

“With Jurgen Klopp, it was unforgettable,” Minamino said, as quoted by Foot Mercato. “He trusted me. I didn’t have a lot of playing time but when I played, I was 100%.

“The club trusted me and I gave it back to them. I thank the coach and the players because it remains a very good memory to have been able to evolve in England.”
