Speaking on The Blood Red Podcast, Pedro Chirivella has been discussing his career after leaving Liverpool in 2020.

The Spanish midfielder was seen as the next big thing at Anfield at one point, but after struggling to break into the first-team, he made the bold decision of turning down a new contract at Liverpool and leaving the club.

Chirivella says that he was keen for a new start, and while he acknowledges that he took a big risk in leaving Anfield, he says that things have gone a lot better than he expected since ditching the Reds.

What’s been said?

Chirivella discussed leaving Liverpool and turning down his new contract.

“Yeah, because the contract wasn’t for me to be a squad player, it was there for me to go on loan and having come back having played one or two seasons on loan I wanted to see if I was capable of being a squad player at Liverpool, but even if I had good experiences on loan I just wanted a new start, somewhere I could find a house, I could settle in and that was the key for moving to Nantes,” Chirivella said.

“For me it’s going better than I expected it after everything I went through at Liverpool. I took a risk not to sign a new contract and to go somewhere else, but I trusted myself to have a good time here in Nantes and since the day I arrived I’ve been an important player for the team and things are going great. We will be playing Europa League this season and my third year here will be better.”

The right move

Although Chirivella had to give up his dream when leaving Liverpool, it looks like this is a rare instance of a player making the right decision when leaving the Reds.

Indeed, while the likes of Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum have struggled since leaving Anfield, Chirivella’s career has really kicked on.

He’s now a regular starter for Nantes in Ligue 1, and he even won the Coupe de France last season.

Unfortunately, he’s probably not good enough to be a starter for a club like Liverpool, but he’s carving out a very respectable career over in France, and who knows? Perhaps he will be back in the Premier League at some point.
