Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Graeme Bailey has been discussing Newcastle’s hunt for a new striker and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Everton forward has been strongly linked with the Magpies for some time now, and while the Tyneside club have turned their attentions more to the likes of Hugo Ekitike, Gianluca Scamacca and Alexander Isak in recent weeks, Bailey maintains that Calvert-Lewin is still their primary target.

The journalist states that Newcastle are still very keen on the England international, but this may well be a deal that drags on as the club feel they could get Calvert-Lewin on the cheap as the window progresses.

What’s been said?

Bailey spoke about Calvert-Lewin and Newcastle.

“Newcastle at the moment are dealing with this budget thing where they have perhaps £50m or £60m to spend on a winger and a striker. I still think they should go all-in on Diaby, he’s a wonderful player and he is attainable. I don’t think that one is completely dead, but the main one they are looking at will be Calvert-Lewin still and with Everton struggling financially, they could probably get him for £50m, but if they wait a few weeks they could get him for £40m or even less,” Bailey said.

Potential bargain

If Newcastle do end up getting Calvert-Lewin for less than £40m then that will have to be considered one of the bargains of the summer.

He’s young, talented, homegrown and a great fit for Eddie Howe’s system.

In a lot of ways, this would be the dream signing for Newcastle, and if they can get him on the cheap, it would be a real statement of intent as Calvert-Lewin has long been linked with some of England’s truly elite clubs.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on as we enter the final weeks of the window.
