Arsenal central defender Rob Holding has told The Athletic that manager Mikel Arteta stopped him from joining Newcastle United in the summer of 2020.

As reported by The Athletic, Newcastle wanted to sign Holding on loan from Arsenal in 2020.

The 26-year-old English defender himself wanted to move to the Magpies, but then Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta convinced him to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Holding told The Athletic: “It was always going to be a loan. I was just back from my ACL injury and thought I needed a full season of playing.

“But after the Community Shield against Liverpool, the boss said to me, ‘You’re going to play here, I don’t know why you’re planning on going on loan’.

“And I said, ‘If I’m going to play here then yeah, I’m happy, no problem’. And I ended up playing 35-odd Premier League games that year.”

Important player for the Gunners

Arsenal defend Rob Holding is not guaranteed a place in the starting lineup, but he is a very good player to have in the squad for the Gunners.

Holding, who joined Arsenal from Bolton Wanderers in the summer of 2016 for £2 million (BBC Sport), gives manager Arteta an option to bring someone on late in games when he needs to shut up shop.

The 26-year-old can also provide cover for Gabriel and Ben White when needed.

Holding made nine starts and six substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Gunners last season.

The Arsenal centre-back scored one goal in those games.

The former Bolton man made 28 starts and two substitute appearances in the Premier League for Arsenal in 2020-21, providing one assist in the process.
