Rio Ferdinand has shared that he found it ‘funny’ that Antonio Conte worked his Tottenham Hotspur players so hard in pre-season that they collapsed to the floor, as he told Football Joe.

The former Manchester United defender that it also brought back ‘bad memories’ for himself, mainly from his days at West Ham because pre-season sessions were even tougher back then.

There is a reason why Conte has one of the fittest teams, regardless of who he manages, and he will have that with Spurs heading into the new Premier League season.

In pre-season, the players were put through it all, as they got a proper taste of what their trophy-laden coach is like given that he joined them midway through last season and they only got spoonfuls.

Nonetheless, those in north London will be dreaming big this season, as Ferdinand praised the ‘infectious’ character the club has in their dressing room.

“With Spurs, it’s the Conte factor,” said Ferdinand. “I just feel his attitude it’s so infectious. The players just buy into him. You either buy in or you are gone.

“You stay here with me and I will take you to win things, or at least, have a chance to win stuff. I think that has been infectious. I get a feeling that the players are loving being there. They are loving him. It’s hard, it’s demanding, but he can make us win! That’s what it feels like and it hasn’t been there for a while.

On pictures of Spurs players collapsing in pre-season: “That was funny,” added Ferdinand. “That made me think ‘I am happy that I’m not doing pre-season anymore’ – seeing them guys, the Harry Kane’s, the Son’s throwing up on the side of the pitch, it brought back bad memories (from my pre-seasons).”

CAN CONTE WIN A TROPHY AT TOTTENHAM?

The improvement, change of attitude and mood Conte made during his short time at the club is anything to go by, then Spurs fans are in for a treat.

Tottenham looked a different animal under the Italian and that was without a pre-season where he is running the players into the ground in a sophisticated manner.

Well, Conte has been able to do that now and it will be interesting to see if he can help win a trophy for the club because this is their best chance in a long time.

Jose Mourinho was in the dugout for a small while, before Daniel Levy sacked him one week before the League Cup final, so he never got that chance.

And whilst Mauricio Pochettino brought the club back to life, when it came to the crunch moments, they didn’t get over the line, but can Conte now change all of that?
