Yesterday, Patrick Vieira made an interesting announcement about Southampton target Chris Richards, after watching his Crystal Palace side draw 1-1 with Leeds.

The Frenchman revealed that he has managed to sign the United States international – who was also wanted by Jesse Marsch – with the south Londoners expected to announce the deal shortly.

What’s the story?

Well, speaking after an intense draw with Leeds in Australia, Vieira told the BBC: “He will give us different options at the back and competitiveness between players. I am really pleased that an important player like that comes to Palace.

“We show that we can attract players. A number of teams wanted him and he decided to come to us – that is a really strong statement.”

The 46-year-old’s comments come after the BBC claimed that Crystal Palace would only be paying an initial £8.5m to sign the defender from Bayern Munich, plus £2.5m in potential add-ons.

In our view, that represents a bargain for the Eagles.

Richards has won six caps for the United States, three Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich – where he also gained Champions League experience – while he can also operate anywhere across the backline.

Ralph Hasenhuttl and Marsch will surely be disappointed to miss out on him, especially for a fee of just £8.5m.

Richards will sign a five-year contract with Crystal Palace, and earns his big move to the Premier League after starring on loan for TSG Hoffenheim last season, where he made 21 appearances.

TSG Hoffenheim have signed Ozan Kabak after missing out on a deal to re-sign Richards.

Leeds & Southampton could regret missing out

Richards appears to be a huge talent, who has all the tools needed to thrive in the Premier League.

Therefore, if he hits the ground running at Selhurst Park, Leeds and Southampton could soon start to become very jealous of Crystal Palace’s £9m signing.

In our view, there is no reason why Richards can’t immediately thrive in SE25.

The American will be part of an already-solid backline including Tyrick Mitchell, Marc Guéhi and Joachim Andersen, so the trio should be able to ease him in nicely.

In truth, if all goes well, Richards could even be a contender for signing of the summer given the fee involved.
