Some shows are so much more than sitting down every week or holing up on the sofa for a string of binge-viewings. They can be experiences. Journeys. They can deeply affect us.

For those who have just finished watching Better Call Saul, you’ll relate. Surely?

Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, the spin-off and prequel to Breaking Bad was a lot more lighthearted than its predecessor, to begin with. After all, many regarded its titular character as the comic relief in the series that started it all.

However, it didn’t take too long for the show to morph into something much more profound and you may have found yourselves more invested than you were in Breaking Bad towards the end.

Speaking of the end, you may be wondering something. Do Saul and Kim end up together in Better Call Saul?

Do Saul and Kim end up together in Better Call Saul?

No, Saul and Kim do not end up back together romantically but they do get a happier ending than you may have been anticipating.

It’s established in the run-up to the finale that Saul and Kim went their separate ways and it’s addressed during their phone call – him at a payphone and her at work – that they haven’t spoken in years.

Their romance is a thing of the distant past and she essentially walked out on a life with Jimmy after Howard’s brutal death. However, some of you may have held out hope that it wasn’t over for the pair of them.

Saul learns that Kim confessed to just about everything that had happened and he finds a way to ensure she’s present at his own trial.

Now that he’s gotten her in the same room he decides to do the same as she did and confess, even going as far as to reveal what he did to Chuck despite it not being a detail in the case.

In the battle between conman and criminal Saul Goodman and good man Jimmy McGill, Kim recognises that Jimmy won in the end. So, she visits him in prison, with parallels to earlier scenes of them sharing a cigarette, drawing attention to just how much has happened since their initial friendship at HHM.

They don’t end up together romantically but Kim visiting shows that he has earned her respect again. In the end, that’s happier than any conclusion we could have envisioned for a man who has lived Saul’s life.

Fans are getting emotional

Fans have paid attention to the detail that Jimmy basically chose to dodge a seven-year sentence and add decades to his time so that he could do the right thing by Kim.

Check out a selection of tweets:

Jimmy didn’t want to get out of prison in 7 years just to be alone again. He preferred to be in prison forever and be able to look Kim in the eyes and know he had done the right thing. Beautiful slow burning ending to #BetterCallSaul he could’ve gotten away with it, but he chose prison just to see Kim one last time to redeem himself— Sahil Mohan Gupta (@DigitallyBones) August 16, 2022

He preferred a possible life in prison but have Kim than 7 year in prison but a miserable life as Saul. Man JIMMY MCGILL #bettercallsaul— better call saul spoilers (@odenhead) August 16, 2022

‘A beautiful act of love’

Rhea Seehorn recently spoke with Vulture and acknowledged that there is still love there on both sides with her character and Bob Odenkirk’s.

“Bob brought something wonderful to that [cigarette] scene…” Rhea said of the ending.

“The way he was doing Jimmy that day, he was so worried about Kim being too scared for him and wanting to let her know that he’s going to be okay. I just thought it was such a beautiful act of love.”
