Jordan Larsson would find himself facing ‘perhaps the biggest pressure ever’ if he was to follow in his father’s footsteps at Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, former Hoops youngster Timothy Mjallby tells The Celtic Way.

Mjallby Jr knows from experience just how tough it can be for the son of a legendary footballer. The now-27-year-old admits that comparisons with Johan Mjallby – three-time Premiership champion – ‘probably affected me quite a lot’ during his time as a budding youngster looking to rise up the Parkhead ranks.

But while Mjallby Sr is obviously remembered with great fondness in the green side of Glasgow, Henrik Larsson is an altogether different entity.

Perhaps Larsson, Jordan – a free-agent following the termination of his Spartak Moscow contract – is better off following a different path.

“We were best friends growing up. We used to hang around a lot when we were kids as my dad and his dad were good mates due to the Swedish and Celtic connection,” Mjallby explains.

“I saw he was linked with a move to Celtic in the summer. That would have been something else. I think it would have been big pressure for Jordan – perhaps the biggest pressure ever – if he signed for Celtic.”

The chances of that happening look slim as things stand.

Sky Sports reported earlier in July that Celtic were offered the chance to sign Henrik’s 25-year-old protégé, only to turn their nose up at such an opportunity. Perhaps they felt that Jordan Larsson was better off avoiding those inevitable – and almost impossible-to-live-up-to – comparisons with the greatest Celtic footballer of the 21st century.

Or perhaps they just had concerns about the Sweden international’s form.

Larsson had been linked with Barcelona, West Ham and Borussia Dortmund back a year ago. Spartak Moscow’s president sensationally claimed that he wanted a fee in the region of £85 million at the time.

But that was before a highly-disappointing 2021/22 campaign. Larsson scored just five goals in 33 games for Spartak and on loan at AIK.
