Sad story behind Ariana Grande’s signature high ponytail

It was a signature look of the 2010s, but Ariana Grande’s high ponytail may be gone for good. The international superstar has spoken out before on the reasons for wearing the iconic hairstyle so often. But there’s a sad truth behind her high ponytail.

The singer had her big break playing Cat Valentine in Nickelodeon shows Victorious and Sam & Cat.

And although it looked great, her character’s bright red hair is part of the reason she could only wear her hair in a ponytail for so long. Ariana said she had to wear the style due to the damage from repeatedly dying her hair.

Nowadays, Ariana changes up her style more often and embraces a much more natural hue.

Giving it some TLC

We all know it was long overdue, but since lockdown, Ariana has been giving her scalp the break it needs. In quarantine, she took to Instagram to show her long-forgotten natural curls, and fans absolutely loved it.

Whilst touring, she’s also been letting her hair down (literally) a bit more instead of her go-to updo.

Back in 2014, Ariana was open with fans on Facebook about the struggle she’d been having with her hai.

She said: “I had to bleach my hair and dye it red every other week for the first 4 years of playing Cat… as one would assume, that completely destroyed my hair. I now wear a wig on Sam & Cat. My real hair is back to brown and I wear extensions but I wear it in a ponytail because my actual hair is so broken that it looks absolutely ratchet and absurd when I let it down.”

Back on the mend

Clearly more comfortable with her natural hair, it’s a lot more common to see Ariana sporting something a little more casual these days. Though she looks stunning no matter her hairstyle, it’s good to see that her hair and scalp are fully on the mend. After all, bleaching hair for that amount of time will really do some damage.

After joining the judging panel on The Voice, Ariana showcased her gorgeous natural locks that had never looked better!

After tweeting in 2018 that she was always supposed to have a high ponytail, she’s obviously come a long way in the last four years to completely change her mind. Since then, the pony has been getting lower and lower.

In 2020, Ariana duetted with Lady Gaga for song Rain on Me. Undeniably an absolute banger, the video also saw her with loose hair, something uncommon for the star at the time.

Ariana also rocked a platinum blonde low ponytail for her No Tears Left To Cry music video, and the internet totally lost it.

One fan joked at the time: “Ariana Grande‘s hair was in a slicked back high ponytail when she came out of the womb”.

Another quipped: “ariana grande’s new song caused my hair to spontaneously become a low platinum ponytail”.

And a third suggested: “Y’all know this a different Ariana Grande when she has a low ponytail for the first time”.
