New Netflix doc features Manti Te’o catfishing hoax

A trailer for Netflix’s Untold series was released this week. The streaming platform has already released five episodes from the gripping sports documentary and a second batch of episodes will arrive this summer.

One of the episodes, entitled Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, will focus on the catfishing scandal that revolved around Manti Te’o.

In a statement, Emmy-winning brothers Chapman and Maclain Way, who are behind the Untold series, said: “Our volume 2 premiere is The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, which explores the story behind college football star Manti Te’o’s headline-grabbing online relationship.

“It was impossible to miss this story when it first broke in 2012 but, as viewers will see in the documentary, what really transpired is so much more complex and nuanced than we understood at the time. We’re incredibly grateful to both Manti Te’o and Ronaiah ‘Naya’ Tuiasosopo for sharing their truths with us.”

What we know about Ronaiah Tuiasosopo and the hoax

In 2012, football fans were saddened when news broke that Te’o’s grandmother had passed away. After a few hours, it was reported the footballer’s alleged girlfriend Lennay Kekua had died of leukemia.

A Deadspin report in January 2013 found there were no records to show Kekua actually existed. The outlet claimed Ronaiah Tuiasosopo was the person behind the Kekua online personality.

The publication reported Kekua’s photos of Te’o were of a woman from Torrance, California, who claimed she’d never met the footballer before.

As reported by People, Tuiasosopo will appear in the sports documentary in which she comes out as a transgender woman.

Tuiasosopo opened up about hoax

Tuiasosopo opened up about the catfishing hoax during an interview with Dr Phil McGraw in 2013.

As reported by The Guardian at the time, Tuiasosopo was said to have fallen “deeply, romantically in love” with Te’o before their two-year romance was called off.

“I wanted to end it because after everything I had gone through, I finally realized I just had to move on with my life,” Tuiasosopo told Dr Phil McGraw.

“I had to start just living and let this go. There were many times where Manti and Lennay had broken up, but something would bring them back together whether it was something going on in his life or in Lennay’s life or in this case, my life.”
