David Moyes is a big fan of Ben Brereton Diaz and Premier League outfit West Ham United would prefer to sign the Blackburn Rovers talisman than Burnley’s Dwight McNeil, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Now, it really depends on what Moyes wants from a new forward.

Does he want goals, or assists? Shots or crosses? Brereton Diaz and McNeil are two very different attackers, after all. The former scored a terrific 22 goals in all competitions last season. The latter has just seven goals to his name from almost 150 career appearances.

What McNeil lacks inside the penalty area, however, he more than makes up for with pinpoint deliveries from out wide. Valued at around £15 million, the England U21 international is likely to come ever-so-slightly cheaper than Brereton Diaz too (Sky Sports).

But, according to the Mail, Moyes would rather Brereton Diaz over the more low-risk, Premier League-proven option that is McNeil.

Dwight McNeil or Ben Brereton Diaz for West Ham United?

The West Ham boss is a huge fan of the former Nottingham Forest youngster, and with good reason. Brereton Diaz was one of the most improved footballers in the whole of the EFL last term, spearheading Blackburn’s promotion charge while scoring some truly outstanding goals from all sorts of angles.

The 23-year-old’s flexibility and technique, meanwhile, means he could play alongside Michail Antonio or instead of him. Thus, giving Moyes further options and depth in the final third. Brereton Diaz’s ‘extraordinary’ work ethic will be well received, too, by a coach who demands blood, sweat and tears.

“Strikers obviously always get the glory of scoring goals,” said former Rovers boss Tony Mowbray. “But he’s a kid who works his socks off for this team.

“He’s working extraordinarily hard. The physical output has been amazing really. (And) he’s developing his finishing technique.”

West Ham were prioritising a deal for free-agent Jesse Lingard this summer. Brereton Diaz could find himself higher than ever on Moyes’ hit-list, however, as Lingard closes in on a move to Nottingham Forest instead.
