RB Leipzig are now ready to negotiate a transfer to sell Amadou Haidara worth just half of the sum Newcastle United offered the Bundesliga club during the January transfer market.

That’s according to Sky Germany, who report the market around the Roten Bullen star has changed drastically during recent months. Haidara had the chance to secure a move to the Premier League over the winter window, but now sits in a complicated situation in Saxony.

Haidara sustained a season-ending medial collateral ligament injury in March that has seen potential suitors shy away. It has also forced RB Leipzig to slash their asking price, with Red Bull Arena chiefs now ready to accept bids worth just €25m (£21m) to sell the 24-year-old.

It is highly likely that Haidara will now start the upcoming season with RB Leipzig as suitors shy from exploring his transfer. The 32-cap Mali international was highly sought-after only a few months ago, with clubs also considering waiting for the summer for a release clause.

The Daily Mail reported in January that Newcastle and Manchester United were exploring Haidara’s transfer from RB Leipzig. Magpies boss Eddie Howe was even prepared to spend £40m after marking Haidara as his top target, despite him demanding a £160k-a/w salary.

Manchester United were unwilling to rival the Toon at the time as Red Devils chiefs wished to wait for his £33m release clause. The exit agreement only became active at the close of the 2021/22 campaign, but it is no longer the bargain his likely suitors expected it to prove.

Haidara had thrived in the Bundesliga, prior to the serious knee injury ruling the midfielder out of the final seven games. He anchored the Roten Bullen engine room over 20 top-flight matches, plus four Champions League, two Europa League and two DFB-Pokal encounters.

His reading of the game and desire to compete was what forced Haidara onto transfer lists at Newcastle and Manchester United, but those traits are no longer enough – despite RB Leipzig being ready to sell their general whom technical director Christopher Vivell lauds.

“He is characterised by his irrepressible will to win and his passion, coupled with good technique and understanding of the game,” Vivell said, via quotes by Bundesliga.com.
