Newcastle United are on the verge of missing out on Burnley’s former Premier League captain Ben Mee to Brentford, with the Bees set to sign the 32-year-old free agent.

According to the Guardian, the English defender rejected two Premier League offers and an approach from MLS to sign for Brentford, with Mee free to join the west London side after leaving Burnley at the end of last season following their relegation to the Championship.

Mee is regarded by many as one of Burnley’s best-ever players in the Premier League era after making league 217 appearances for the Clarests, yet with the club dropping out of the English top-flight, a change of scenery was needed for the defender, with Newcastle reportedly one of the sides interested in signing the former Manchester City academy graduate.

However, it is Brentford who have won the race for the Newcastle target, with Ethan Pinnock and Kristoffer Ajer suffering from injury concerns ahead of the new season that has forced Thomas Frank to move for Mee, who could be an incredible addition to the Bees.

Earning a reported £73,000-a-week at Burnley, Mee was one of the club’s highest-paid players following their relegation to the Championship, yet with the defender leaving at the end of his contract, Brentford are free to pay the veteran centre-back a decent wage to play in west London.

Indeed, the signing could come as a blow for Newcastle, who could have done with an experienced Premier League defender such as Mee to lead Eddie Howe’s back-line, a role Dan Burn took up with incredible results last season as the Magpies stormed the division in 2022.

Mee has proven over the years to be one of the best Premier League captains in recent seasons, and Brentford landing the veteran defender is a massive coup for Frank, who now has an established leader both on and off the pitch on his books, something that Newcastle could have benefited from.

After all, whilst Newcastle are building an incredibly exciting projects, surrounding the squad with players to keep the team grounded would have been a unique and effective direction to take the club, something Mee would have brought to the Toon had they moved to sign the defender over Brentford.
