Rangers are leading the race to sign £16 million Premier League misfit Patrick Cutrone from Wolverhampton Wanderers but face La Liga competition, according to Calciomercato.
The word ‘crossroads’ comes to mind.
Cutrone has less than 12 months left on his contract at Molineux. And while the once-capped Italy international has spent the last three seasons out on loan – at Fiorentina, Valencia and Empoli respectively – it would make little sense for Wolves to let Cutrone leave on another short-term deal.
Unless to Black Country club can cash in now – and recoup at least some of that £16 million investment – Cutrone will leave for absolutely nothing in the summer of 2023.
Could Rangers really sign Wolves’ Patrick Cutrone?
How much Wolves want, or how much Rangers are willing to pay, remains a mystery at this stage.

The Express and Star do claim that Wolves are hoping to recoup a ‘substantial’ fee for a man who’s scored just twice in 14 Premier League fixtures. Cutrone didn’t exactly do his ailing reputation much good during a series of loan spells however. He found the net just eight times in 72 matches away from his parent club.
Rangers’ apparent interest, then, will raise a few eyebrows. Calciomercato say that the Glasgow giants are in pole position, alongside La Liga outfit Celta Vigo.
It must be said, however, that Cutrone is still just 24. He was one of Europe’s most exciting young poachers a couple of seasons ago, inheriting the iconic number nine shirt at Italian giants AC Milan after exploding onto the scene with 18 goals during the 2017/18 season.
Former Rossoneri boss Gennaro Gattuso even drew comparisons between a teenage Cutrone and Italian legend Pippo Inzaghi.
“They certainly resemble one another,” Gattuso said. “He’s young. He can be a protagonist in our league for many years.”
If Cutrone can recapture even a sliver of the form that had some tipping him for greatness at the San Siro before Wolves splashed out £16 million to secure his signature, the Italian may still have a lot to offer north of the border.
“Now, we have to find a solution for Patrick,” Cutrone’s agent, Federico Pastorello, said earlier in the summer. “No longer on loan because we are finally entering the last year with Wolverhampton.”
