Leeds United product Jamie Shackleton may have played his final game for the Elland Road outfit already after the Whites agreed to give Millwall an option to buy in his loan transfer.

That’s according to London News Online, who report Millwall sought to include a purchase clause in their deal for Shackleton. He is the second Leeds gem to leave West Yorkshire for south east London so far this summer following a straight loan move for Charlie Cresswell.

Leeds have allowed Cresswell to move to the Den for the upcoming Championship season to afford the defender regular senior minutes. He will return to Elland Road at the end of the campaign regardless of his performances in a Lions shirt under manager Gary Rowett.

Shackleton, though, could find a long-term home in south east London, should he impress in the capital this term. The 22-year-old has already made his Millwall debut, after coming off the bench during a pre-season friendly against Swedish side Hammarby on Wednesday.

Rowett could hand Shackleton his competitive bow when Millwall open the Championship season at home to Stoke City on July 30. The Lions will be striving to improve on last term’s ninth-place finish over the new campaign, having missed out on the play-offs by six points.

Millwall gained option to buy Jamie Shackleton in loan terms with Leeds

Millwall have fended off rival Championship interest to sign Shackleton on loan from Leeds with an option to buy. The Athletic claimed prior to his move to the Den that at least three second-tier clubs were keen on the former England U20 international’s skills this summer.

Shackleton last displayed his skill in a senior Leeds shirt during a competitive game in May. A cameo off the bench at home to Brighton & Hove Albion after three months without any Premier League football was his 79th first-team outing with the Whites in all competitions.

The Whites product has struggled to cement an instrumental first-team presence at Elland Road since United secured their top-flight promotion. Of his 27 Premier League games to date, Shackleton has only opened 10 for a combined 1,157 minutes through two seasons.

His efforts off the bench could leave a positive impression, though. Leeds hero Jermaine Beckford hailed Shackleton for his substitute display against Aston Villa in October 2020.

“He just looked like he’d played every game this season,” Beckford told LUTV. “He didn’t look like a player that had just been drafted in to fill a gap. He looked like he knew exactly what he was supposed to do, where he was supposed to be.

“His energy levels right from when he first came on until the end of the game were absolutely phenomenal.”
