Hoffenheim defender David Raum is set to snub interest from West Ham United to sign for RB Leipzig over his aims to play Champions League football and go to the 2022 World Cup.

That’s according to Sky Germany, who report Raum has attracted a wealth of elite interest this summer. But he is prepared to accept a move to the Red Bull Arena as it will provide a chance to earn regular minutes and force his way into Hansi Flick’s plans at the World Cup.

The 24-year-old has been a constant member of the Mannschaft unit since his maiden call-up in September. But Raum has only started seven of his nine appearances from a possible 13 games, as Flick considers who his best left-back option will be at the Qatar tournament.

RB Leipzig entered into advanced negotiations with Hoffenheim for Raum’s arrival late on Thursday evening. The transfer is now on the verge of competition, although no contracts have been signed as of yet, for a fee of around €30-35m (£25.5-30m) plus future add-ons.

Hoffenheim expect Raum to seal his switch to Saxony soon as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund did not advance their interest. Manchester United also held some discussions to sound out the conditions needed to sign the Nurnberg native, but did not persist the case.

West Ham to miss out to RB Leipzig after Hoffenheim talks for David Raum

Raum has been sought-after among Champions League sides this summer after offering 13 assists and three goals in 32 Bundesliga games last term. West Ham have also spoken with Hoffenheim over their defender, who joined for free last year after leaving Greuther Furth.

That’s according to The Times, who report West Ham have shown interest in signing Raum as his stellar Hoffenheim displays caught David Moyes’ eye. The Hammers took note of his Bundesliga-high tallies of 188 crosses from open-play and 1,063 sprints during last season.

Raum also ranked second in Germany’s top-flight with 2,676 intensive runs after relishing an attacking role at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena. But West Ham are set to miss out to interest from RB Leipzig for Raum, who Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen rates very highly.

Rosen said, via Bundesliga.com, of his 2021/22 campaign: “David is a highly-talented and extremely fast player with a strong left-foot, who has developed into one of the most sought-after full-backs in Germany thanks to his outstanding performance this season.”
