Nottingham Forest have failed with an initial £4 million bid for Real Betis left-back Alex Moreno, according to AS, with the La Liga outfit holding out for nearly £20 million.

Why Forest thought a 5 million euro offer would be sufficient is anyone’s guess.

Real Betis have already rejected a bigger bid from another Premier League club this summer after all. Fulham’s £8 million proposal was batted away in June. The Cottagers quickly turned their attention to the likes of Juventus’ Luca Pellegrini and Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Vinagre.

According to The Athletic, Nottingham Forest opened talks with Moreno this week. And their pursuit of the former Espanyol man appears to have been accelerated, following the news that Omar Richards faces a spell on the sidelines with a suspected hairline fracture in his leg.

Nottingham Forest will have to improve substantially on a ‘derisory’ opening bid of £4 million, however. It remains to be seen if they are willing to pay the staggering sum Betis want for a man who recently celebrated his 29th birthday.

Steve Cooper’s play-off winners have already taken their tally of summer signings into double figures, with Jesse Lingard arrival number 11. Interestingly, three of those can play on the left-hand side of the defence; Richards, Harry Toffolo and the two-footed Neco Williams.

The buccaneering Moreno would provide a more attacking alternative. Arguably the most potent left-back in La Liga produced a combined 10 goals and assists as Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis side won the Copa del Rey and secured qualification for the Europa League.

It seems unlikely that Moreno will push for a departure from the Estadio Benino Villamarin, however. Not if his comments to Spanish publication El Cargol on Thursday are anything to go by.

“This season, we will play four competitions. And this is good because it means that Betis has the opportunity to win titles,” Moreno said.

“The farther we go, the better, because we will play a lot of games. If we can get to a final, like this year, we’ll see what happens.

“In the end, we want to keep winning titles. And, if it’s next year, (even) better.”

Moreno has three years left on his Real Betis contract.
