Newcastle United have pledged to outbid the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Ajax as Braga await an offer from the Premier League outfit for teen sensation Roger Fernandes, according to A Bola.

While Newcastle’s first transfer window under Saudi ownership coincided with the arrivals of Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn and Matt Targett, this was business born out of necessity.

The Magpies, at the time, were staring relegation in the face. They needed players capable of slotting straight into Eddie Howe’s starting XI while making an immediate impact.

Newcastle’s summer activity, however, offers a more instructive insight into the club’s plans. Plans which revolve around young, up-and-coming talent brimming with desire and potential. Sven Botman, for instance. Hugo Ekitike and Sekou Mara.

But reports suggesting that Newcastle are willing to splash out an eight-figure sum on a 16-year-old with only a handful of first-team league appearances under his belt feels like such a policy taken to the extreme.

Newcastle United are serious about wonderkid Roger Fernandes

According to A Bola, Dortmund have offered £9 million for Roger. Ajax offered £10 million. 2021 La Liga champions Atletico Madrid are preparing a bid of their own too, though Joao Felix’s tough spell in the Spanish capital should perhaps be a cautionary tale for another Portugal-based wonderkid.

Diego Simeone reportedly feels that Roger, who doesn’t even turn 17 until November, can slot straight into the Atletico team on the left-hand side of their attack.

The report adds, however, that Newcastle United are ‘guaranteed’ outbid every single one of their rivals, convinced that Roger will be prove to be an inspired – if rather expensive – investment.

The Magpies have already held talks with Roger’s representatives (TSF). Newcastle will stump up a fee in the region of £17 million for a player they see as the most exciting young talent in the whole of the Primeira Liga, and plan to sweeten the deal by allowing the Guinea Bissau-born forward to spend the 2022/23 season back on loan at Braga.

“When doing my analysis notes after a game to correct the boy, there was something that I did not understand,” former Braga boss Carlos Carvalhal tells Sky.

“This boy was doing everything that we had requested for his position. I wanted to correct something but I had nothing. Absolutely zero. It was unbelievable. I know football (and) this is not normal.

“He had studied his movements in the offensive phase, defensive phase and the transition. Wow. At 15 years old, this was something special.”

Roger scored his first senior goal at just 15.
