Newcastle United want Dwight McNeil and could move for him if Leeds United stand firm on Jack Harrison.

Newcastle are chasing a winger and have been left frustrated in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Moussa Diaby.

Leeds ace Harrison has emerged as one of the top targets for Newcastle, but the Whites don’t want to sell.

Having just sold one winger in Raphinha, Leeds understandably want to keep hold of Harrison.

That leaves Newcastle having to chase other options – and one of them appears to be Dwight McNeil.

Newcastle United want Dwight McNeil

The Sun report that Newcastle are now lining up a move to sign Burnley wide man McNeil.

It’s stated that Burnley would sell McNeil for around £15million, which is a fraction of the money Leeds would want for Harrison.

That would surely appeal to Newcastle but Crystal Palace, Everton and West Ham United are also interested in McNeil.

The priority seems to be a left-footed winger; Diaby, Harrison and now McNeil all fit that bill.

McNeil certainly isn’t as exciting as Diaby but he has previously shown his quality in the Burnley side.

Last season was a concern; McNeil managed no goals and just one assist in over 3000 minutes of Premier League action.

Burnley’s dismal campaign may have sapped McNeil’s confidence and a fresh start could be best for all parties.

McNeil has previously been praised as a ‘really quality player’ by Jamie Carragher but needs to rediscover that touch.

A move to Newcastle could help, and he would have a familiar face at St James’ Park with Nick Pope having already made the move from Burnley to Tyneside.

There are many who are wondering just why Newcastle aren’t making more signings given their riches.

Yet this comes down to value for money; £35million for Harrison may not be what Newcastle think he is worth, whereas £15million for McNeil is far more reasonable.

McNeil is a name to keep a close eye on now, with Newcastle seemingly lining up alternatives to Harrison.
