Manchester City have reportedly been inspired by the development of Wolves midfielder and reported Leeds United target Morgan Gibbs-White at Sheffield United last season ahead of James McAtee signing for the Blades on loan.

According to the Athletic, the Premier League champions have been bombarded with loan requests for their academy wonderkid, however, Sheffield United’s proposal caught City’s eye in large part to the incredible development of England youth international Gibbs-White at the Blades last season.

The midfielder signed for the Championship side and quickly become one of their best players as Sheffield United made it all the way to the play-offs, with the likes of Leeds and Everton now interested in signing Gibbs-White, who is reportedly valued at just £30m.

And this incredible development is what has led City to loaning out McAtee to the Blades, with Sheffield United set to sign the talented midfielder on loan for the season, beating out dozens of Premier League sides as well as many clubs in the Championship and abroad for the 19-year-old.

McAtee is widely considered to be the next big thing to come out of City’s academy after Phil Foden, with the midfielder making a handful of substitute appearances for Pep Guardiola last season, and although the youngster wanted to stay in Manchester, the 19-year-old has seemingly been swayed to sign for Sheffield United.

Indeed, the Yorkshire side are set for a big season after almost winning promotion last year, and following the incredible impact Gibbs-White had at Sheffield United, McAtee could have a similar success story if the City talent hits the ground running at Bramall Lane.

McAtee’s instance to stay in City for the season was understandable given that the midfielder is seemingly confident in his own abilities to flourish in the Premier League, however, a Championship move is arguably the right decision for the youngster at this stage of his career, and signing for Sheffield United is a great move for the teenager.

After all, the Blades are one of the biggest clubs in the second-tier who this season have a real chance of winning promotion back to the Premier League, and with McAtee set to replace Gibbs-White’s role last season, the City talent could enjoy a breakout year in the Championship with Paul Heckingbottom’s side.
