Premier League champions Manchester City are willing to pay up to £9 million for Sergio Gomez with the former Barcelona youngster left out of Anderlecht’s squad for Thursday’s clash, as reported by the club’s official Twitter page.

It’s incredible to think that, throughout the majority of the Pep Guardiola era, City have often gone about their business without a ‘proper’ left-back in their starting XI.

Neither Joao Cancelo, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Nathan Ake nor Fabian Delph can really be considered ‘naturals’ in the position. Not that this has stopped the men from North West from dominating the domestic landscape over the course of the last half-century of course.

But following Zinchenko’s £32 million move to Arsenal, Manchester City appear to have decided that enough is enough. It’s time for a left-back. A real one, at that.

And after Chelsea moved into pole position for Marc Cucurella – out-bidding their rivals with a colossal £50 million offer – City have turned to another swashbuckling Spaniard who rose through the ranks in Barcelona’s feted La Masia academy.

According to The Athletic, talks with 21-year-old Gomez are now underway. Man City are offering to pay £6 million up front, plus a further £3 million with bonuses. Anderlecht are holding out for £13 million, though one suspects a compromise will be reached.

Per Sacha Tavolieri, a respected Belgian football reporter, Gomez – who had a brief spell at Borussia Dortmund before crossing the border – could spend next season on loan at Girona rather than immediately forming part of Guardiola’s first-team squad at the Etihad Stadium.

Then again the numbers certainly paint the picture of a footballer perfectly suited to City’s system; One that gives their full-backs a substantial amount of creative licence. He provided seven goals and 15 assists from the flank last season.

And has Gomez already played his final game in Anderlecht colours? He was conspicuous by his absence as the Belgian giants announced their 23-man squad for this week’s UEFA Conference League qualifier against Estonian outfit Paide Linnameeskond.
