Manchester City are £20m shy of Brighton & Hove Albion’s asking price for Marc Cucurella and refuse to meet the Seagulls’ valuation, despite rival interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

That’s according to ESPN, who note the Citizens are striving to sign the Spaniard as Arsenal close in on Oleksandr Zinchenko’s signature. The Ukraine international’s likely £32m move to the Gunners will leave Pep Guardiola with only Joao Cancelo as his recognised left-back.

Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte can occupy wide defensive roles, along with their central duties, when needed. But Manchester City have identified Cucurella as the best option to provide Guardiola with an out-and-out full-back entering the new Premier League season.

Brighton, though, have set the market for Cucurella at £50m, despite Graham Potter’s side only paying Getafe £15.5m for the 23-year-old’s transfer last August. The Seagulls paid the release clause in the five-cap international’s contract and also handed him a five-year deal.

Manchester City feel Cucurella’s value is actually closer to £30m and will not advance their interest if Brighton’s valuation remains. The defender only has one year of Premier League experience, through which he started all 35 of his appearances for one goal and one assist.

Manchester City open door to Tottenham interest in Cucurella of Brighton

Personal terms should not be an issue for Manchester City, with Fabrizio Romano adding a full verbal agreement with Cucurella is close. He has always been Guardiola’s priority name to replace Zinchenko at the Etihad Stadium. Yet the £20m disparity in price tags is an issue.

An issue that could swing the door open for Tottenham to pip Manchester City with Spurs’ interest in Cucurella moving from Brighton. The Sun have previously cited north and west London as potential landing spots for the defender with Antonio Conte and Chelsea keen.

Half of the Premier League’s big-six are eager to add Cucurella to their clubs after what he offered in one year in England. His performances also blew Brighton owner and chairman Tony Bloom away, who said earlier this month that the Seagulls were yet to receive a bid.

“All I can say about Marc is he is a tremendous player, a tremendous person,” Bloom told BBC Radio Sussex. “He’s brilliant for the dressing room.

“The players love him, Graham and the coaches love him, I love him, the fans love him. He was unbelievably good last season, his first season in the Premier League. We’re hoping for more to come, and we haven’t had a bid for him.”

Interest from Tottenham and Chelsea will let Brighton demand their valuation in full, even if Manchester City believe Cucurella is worth £20m less, and will not be against him staying.
