Manchester City have reportedly been offered the chance to sign Benfica defender Alex Grimaldo, who Arsenal were rumoured to be in talks with last week.

According to iNews, the Spanish fullback has been shopped around to Premier League sides as Grimaldo looks to leave Portugal this summer, with City one of the clubs approached with the chance to sign the former FC Barcelona academy graduate.

Grimaldo is considered by many as one of Europe’s best left-backs currently not playing in a top-five division, though that looks set to change in the coming weeks with Benfica open to selling their star defender as a move to the Premier League begins to grow more likely.

Reports suggest that the Spaniard could leave for £15m, and with City currently failing in their pursuit to sign Brighton & Hove Albion defender Marc Cucurella, Grimaldo could be a fantastic alternative for Pep Guardiola’s side, and they could beat Arsenal to the 26-year-old.

As we know, Oleksandr Zinchenko has signed for Arsenal from City, and the funds recouped from that deal could all go completely into signing Grimaldo, who would be a great squad option for the left-back position and would be a worthy challenger for Joao Cancelo for the role.

With Benfica also keen on offloading Grimaldo this summer, City could wrap up a deal for the defender at a record pace, especially with Arsenal seemingly dropping out of the race for the Spaniard as Mikel Arteta looks set to announce the signing of Zinchenko this week.

City have lacked a quality natural left-back for quite some time, and with Arsenal now seemingly out of the competition to sign Grimaldo, the Premier League champions could now have a free shot at landing the Benfica defender if they work quickly enough.

Indeed, other Premier League sides will be interested in signing Grimaldo, and City has the strongest pull out of any club in the chase for the Spaniard given their need for a quality left-back and the opportunities the Benfica star will have in Manchester under Guardiola.
