Manchester City have had a £30m bid rejected by Brighton & Hove Albion for Marc Cucurella, the exact fee the Premier League champions received from Arsenal for Oleksandr Zinchenko.

According to the Athletic, City have had an opening offer for the Spanish defender shot down by Brighton, who value their star fullback at £50m as the Seagulls sit on very little pressure to sell Cucurella, who only joined the south coast club last year.

The sale of Zinchenko to Arsenal has seemingly financed City’s move for Cucurella, however, Brighton want more than £30m for their 23-year-old left-back, with the Spaniard one of the breakout stars in the Premier League last year in his debut season in England.

As per the report, City will threaten to walk away from signing Cucurella if Brighton don’t lower their £50m asking price for the fullback, a fee that many would view as reasonable given that the defender has only been at the club for 12 months and that the Seagulls sold Ben White to Arsenal for a similar fee last summer.

Indeed, City’s pursuit for Cucurella seems to be unravelling more and more with each new day, and this opening bid being rejected by Brighton is the last thing Pep Guardiola needed ahead of the new season, with Joao Cancelo currently the club’s only natural option at left-back.

With Brighton’s stance on Cucurella clear, City look to have pushed themselves into a corner, and the Premier League champions might have to fork out the £50m asking price the Seagulls are demanding if they’re to land the talented Spanish star in the coming weeks.

Rejected City bid could be the start of a drawn out Cucurella saga

City are not the first club to embroil themselves in a lengthy transfer saga, yet this rejected bid for Cucurella could be the start of a drawn-out episode involving the Brighton left-back for the remainder of the summer if the Cityzens refuse to meet the £50m asking price.

After all, City might not make another major sale this summer following the departure of Zinchenko, and trying to pry Brighton away from Cucurella will take some undertaking given the huge financial power the Manchester giants possess.
