Liverpool seemingly won’t be signing Matheus Nunes this summer as he commits to another year with Sporting.

The Reds have been taking a close look at the Portuguese market in recent times.

Liverpool raided Porto in January by snapping up winger Luis Diaz, who really impressed after his arrival at Anfield.

Diaz’s excellence resulted in Liverpool moving for another star playing in Portugal as Darwin Nunez joined from Benfica earlier this summer.

Porto and Benfica have been raided, so what about Portugal’s other powerhouse Sporting?

Liverpool seemingly won’t be signing Matheus Nunes

Sure enough, Liverpool have been linked with a move to sign a Sporting star this summer.

Portuguese newspaper Jornal de Noticias reported earlier this month that Liverpool were very interested in Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

Correio da Manha then reported that Liverpool would soon be opening talks to sign Nunes ahead of a possible deal.

The excitement was then slowed down a little as The Athletic’s Liverpool reporter James Pearce tweeted that rumours of a move for Nunes were ‘nonsense’.

Liverpool allegedly don’t plan to sign a midfielder this summer; it increasingly feels like the Reds will put all of their eggs in the Jude Bellingham basket for next summer.

Nunes to Anfield seems unlikely this summer and it now appears that he won’t be leaving Sporting at all.

O Jogo report that Nunes has decided to stay with Sporting for one more year after holding talks with manager Ruben Amorim.

The Portugal international has been linked away from Sporting all summer but it now seems that Amorim’s influence has paid dividends.

Nunes will still be in demand next summer though, and it would be little surprise to see Liverpool linked again as a backup target to Bellingham.

Nunes is quick, relentless and energetic, exactly the type of midfielder Jurgen Klopp would love.

A deal would be a huge shock this summer with Liverpool’s interest played down and Nunes now deciding to stay at Sporting anyway, but he may be a name to keep an eye on next season.
