Newcastle United want Sekou Mara but they face competition from the likes of Aston Villa and Leeds United.

The Magpies have missed out on Hugo Ekitike after the State de Reims talent decided to make a move to Paris Saint-Germain over St James’ Park.

Ekitike was seen as an ideal talent to mould for the future having already made a big impact over in France.

MIssing out on him was a blow but Newcastle seemingly fancy adding another young attacking talent from French football.

Newcastle United want Sekou Mara

Reports from the Daily Mail over the weekend suggested that Newcastle had enquired about Bordeaux forward Sekou Mara.

That information has now been backed up by Foot Mercato, who claim that Newcastle’s interest is ‘very concrete’ but no agreement was in place.

That report also suggested that two Premier League rivals – Leeds United and Aston Villa – had joined Newcastle in the fight for Mara’s signature.

Mara, 19, started just eight league games last season but still managed six goals for a dismal Bordeaux side.

Bordeaux have been relegated to the second tier but their financial situation means that they have been demoted to the third tier.

An exciting attacker like Mara surely won’t want to be playing in the third division of French football – especially if there is Premier League interest.

Mara has even been hailed as a ‘complete striker’ over in France, so there is major excitement about the teenager’s future.

Leeds have been chasing another exciting young French attacker in Arnaud Kalimuendo, though luring him away from Paris Saint-Germain may be harder than first expected.

That means Mara may become a very realistic target for Leeds, with Bordeaux hardly in a position to put up much of a fight at the moment.

Newcastle seem to be showing the strongest interest but you just can’t rule Leeds or Villa out of this race right now with all three chasing attacking signings.
