Leeds United reportedly remain interested in signing former Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster, with the 39-year-old Premier League veteran still a free agent following his release from the Vicarage Road side.
According to the Daily Mail, Jesse Marsch’s side are still considering whether to move for Foster this summer, with Leeds keen to sign an experienced backup keeper to challenge the established no. 1 Illan Meslier, with Kristoffer Klaesson not quite ready to act as deputy given the keeper’s inexperience in the top-flight.
Foster has been a Premier League table for the good part of 20 years, with the 8-cap England international making 390 appearances in total in the division and establishing himself with the likes of West Brom and Watford as a solid goalkeeper at the top of English football.
Yet following Watford’s relegation back to the Championship, Foster was released at the end of his contract, with the veteran goalkeeper yet to find a new club ahead of the new season, yet Leeds could now be the favourites to sign the 39-year-old.
A player who has boomed in popularity over the past two years thanks to his exploits off the pitch on YouTube and on Spotify, Foster could still be a shrewd signing for Leeds should Marsch decide to go all in on the former England international as a backup option for Meslier, something the keeper has spoken about at length on the Fozcast.
Foster has previously said about being a backup at a top club: “I know I have a world-class goalkeeper in front of me, who is still at an age where they are learning and they can get better. And they can because they have the potential. I would let that point go, ‘right, I am going to help you as much as I can to maximise your ability and make sure you become a monster, give you all the tools that I have learnt’.”

It’s pretty easy to forget that Meslier has been one of Leeds’ most consistent performers in the Premier League since their return in 2020 and that the French youngster is still just 22-years-old, an incredible age for a goalkeeper in a division with as much quality as the English top-flight, and signing Foster could help the Whites superstar’s development in a big way.
After all, Meslier has not had any real guidance during his time at Leeds from a senior goalkeeper, and Foster could be an excellent mentor for the talented Premier League shot-stopper, who is well on track to becoming one of the best in his position, especially if Leeds were to sign the 39-year-old veteran as a backup.
