Fulham are in talks to sign £30 million Barcelona goalkeeper Norberto Neto but, according to Spanish publication Sport, he’d prefer to join Napoli than the Premier League newcomers.

Fulham’s summer-long pursuit of a new number one has taken more twists and turns than a Christopher Nolan blockbuster. And, at times, it’s been about as incomprehensible and confusing as the plot of Tenet.

First, it was supposed to be Thomas Strakosha. Fulham appeared to be on the verge of welcoming the Lazio shot-stopper to West London before a deal fell through at the eleventh hour, with Strakosha putting pen to paper with Brentford a couple of months later.

Alphonse Areola then chose West Ham, Nick Pope opted for Newcastle United and a deal for Bernd Leno hit the buffers after Arsenal refused to budge on the German’s £11 million asking price. Sergio Rico, the former Craven Cottage loanee, was even linked on Thursday.

So Fulham fans would be forgiven for refusing to get their hopes up over Neto. They’ve been burned before, after all.

According to Sport, the Championship champions are in talks with the Brazil international’s representatives. Neto joined Barcelona from Valencia for a huge fee back in 2019 but it is understood that he is now free to leave the Camp Nou for absolutely nothing.

The La Liga giants are willing to tear up the final 12 months of his contract, having omitted Neto from Xavi Hernandez’s pre-season trip to the United States.

Barcelona – and Fulham for that matter – are hoping to reach an agreement before the week is out. The former Juventus and Fiorentina man is holding out for a return to Serie A, however. Napoli remains his preferred destination. So Marco Silva and co still have a long way to go before the finish line looms into view.

Per Sport, Neto’s camp were attempting to secure the 32-year-old a move to Arsenal earlier in the window.

But the the Leno’s situation, plus Matt Turner’s arrival from the MLS, means the Gunners are unlikely to bite.
