Napoli have not yet sealed a £19 million deal for Kim Min-Jae with CalcioNapoli24 reporting that Premier League outfit Everton are still hopeful of hi-jacking the Serie A giants.

Is there a better value-for-money signing in the whole of England’s top flight than James Tarkowski? The former Burnley stalwart might not have hogged the headlines like Darwin Nunez, Erling Haaland or Gabriel Jesus. But, for an Everton side crying out for a vocal, consistent presence at the heart of their backline, Tarkowski feels like a potentially transformative addition.

The 29-year-old alone might not be enough to rectify Everton’s extensive defensive problems, however. Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey all performed well below expectations in 2021/22.

And while Yerry Mina was the best of a bad lot, the Colombian’s piano-wire muscles and dreadful injury record mean it would be foolish for Frank Lampard to pin all his hopes on Mina.

Could Everton beat Napoli to Kim Min-Jae?

Kim-Min Jae, then, would be a very welcome addition at Goodison Park.

Likened to Virgil van Dijk due to his colossal frame and terrific passing range, the South Korea international has a £19 million release clause in his Fenerbahce contract. And while Napoli are currently in pole position, CalcioNapoli reporter Ciro Venerato is at pains to point out that a move to the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona is far from done and dusted.

“I am receiving signs of white smoke for Kim,” Venerato explains.

“There is a continuous email exchange. There are contractual aspects to clarify regarding the instalments to be paid. The contract with the player is not simple, or nice and done. I’m told by Napoli that, until it is signed, we cannot take the deal for certain or (assume that it is) concluded.”

Napoli, Venerato adds, have ‘not given up’ on alternative targets; PSG’s Abdou Diallo and Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof to name but two.

“The club is not yet certain about Kim,” he says.

“Negotiations are also continuing with (Fenerbahce). This means that Napoli feel optimistic about Kim. But the contract is not yet signed, and Fenerbahce have not yet accepted.

“The final figure is also being discussed, as well as the contract. Everton have not yet given up with Kim. They have had talks with the agents and Napoli know this too.”

Fenerbahce coach Jorge Jesus this week confirmed that Kim is set to leave the Turkish giants. Where he ends up next, however, is anyone’s guess.
