Borussia Monchengladbach could sell Alassane Plea for just £7 million with Everton eyeing up a deal to bring the France international across the Channel to the Premier League, as reported by L’Equipe.

Almost every forward linked with a move to Goodison Park this summer will be viewed through the prism of ‘life after Richarlison’.

But while Plea’s stats are not quite as impressive as Tottenham’s new number nine, they are similar enough to suggest that a versatile, technically-gifted forward with one cap for the French national team could go some way to filling a Richarlison-shaped void in Frank Lampard’s frontline.

Richarlison scored 53 goals in four years as an Everton player. That is just six more than Plea across the same time frame, although the former played more frequently than the latter.

And, like Richarlison, Plea is equally comfortable playing through the middle or wide on the left. He made up 50 per cent of one of the Bundesliga’s most potent strike partnerships a couple of seasons back too, thriving alongside Marcus Thuram at Borussia Park.

In theory, this shows he’d have relatively few problems adapting to life alongside Dominic Calvert-Lewin in Frank Lampard’s 4-3-3 formation.

“The co-operation between Thuram and Plea up front is extraordinary,” German legend Gunter Netzer said back in 2019.

“Gladbach are developing a real strike force. It’s really great to see that in combination. That’s part of the reason why Gladbach have done so well.”

Can Alassane Plea replace Richarlison at Everton?

According to L’Equipe, Plea may be available for just £7 million this summer. The former Nice talisman has just one year left on his contract, and is reportedly refusing to extend.

Plea is keen on a return to Ligue 1. Marseille are one potential destination while former Gladbach boss Lucien Favre wants him back at the Allianz Riviera. But the chance to play Premier League football for the very first time could potentially twist Plea’s arm.

What’s more, Gladbach director Roland Virkus admits the Die Fohlen may look to cash in on players entering the final 12 months of their contracts.

“I don’t want to sell any of the guys,” Virkus tells Kicker. “It can’t be ruled out that they will pursue other goals for themselves. If no agreement can be found, one would have to consider how to solve the situation.”
