Everton could now sign Georginio Wijnaldum on loan after Paris Saint-Germain told Roma to offer an obligation to buy whilst negotiating the Serie A side’s interest in his transfer.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who note Jose Mourinho is keen to add Wijnaldum to his ranks after signing Paulo Dybala. But the Giallorossi do not wish to meet PSG’s €15m (£13m) valuation this summer, so proposed a season-long switch for the Dutch midfielder.

Roma are open to including an option to buy Wijnaldum next summer, should he impress at the Stadio Olimpico. But Paris Saint-Germain will only consider delaying a permanent sale until 2023 on the guarantee that the deal becomes official come the close of the season.

An even greater obstacle stands before Roma in the shape of the lucrative salary Wijnaldum earns in France. Giallorossi sporting director Tiago Pinto has asked Paris Saint-Germain if the Ligue 1 giants would consider covering half of his wage and will meet again next week.

Paris Saint-Germain handed Wijnaldum a €10m-a-year (£164k-a/w) contract to join as a free agent last year. But his debut season at the Parc des Princes did not produce the levels Les Parisiens expected of a midfielder Jurgen Klopp had called ‘sensational’ while at Liverpool.

Everton are interested in rivalling Roma for Paris Saint-Germain exit of Wijnaldum

Pinto has scheduled a further meeting with Paris Saint-Germain to discuss Roma’s interest in Wijnaldum for next week. Les Parisiens have encouraged the Giallorossi to continue discussions with their positive response to possibly covering half of the 31-year-old’s salary.

Everton are also interested in Wijnaldum’s potential transfer this summer, per 90min, with Toffees chiefs keeping close tabs on developments at Paris Saint-Germain. The 86-cap star only started in 18 of his 31 Ligue 1 appearances last season after leaving Liverpool in June.

His move to the French capital marked the end of a six-year stay in the Premier League with Newcastle United and Liverpool. Wijnaldum enjoyed 217 top-flight appearances in England, and even opened 34 of his 38 appearances in 2020/21, having played in all possible games.
