According to The Athletic, Crystal Palace went to scout Liverpool target Ismaila Sarr last night as Watford held Birmingham to a 1-1 draw in the Championship.

However, the 24-year-old was nowhere to be seen after Rob Edwards left him out of the squad.

What’s the story?

Well, The Athletic believe Crystal Palace are currently working on a deal to sign Sarr, although no official bid has been made by the south Londoners as of yet.

If a deal materialised, it would be interesting to see how Liverpool react – Jürgen Klopp is said to be a big fan of Sadio Mane’s international teammate.

Dougie Freedman – Director of Football at Selhurst Park – travelled to St Andrew’s on Tuesday evening with the expectation of seeing the Watford No.23 in action, although he was left out as a precaution due to a hamstring issue.

However, negotiations have been going on in the background between the Eagles and the Hornets for a few weeks now, with the south Londoners long-term admirers of Sarr.

Crystal Palace working on deal to sign Ismaila Sarr from Watford. No formal bid yet but interest firm & discussions ongoing. #CPFC SD Dougie Freedman at Birmingham tonight but 24yo left out, injury precaution. Crystal Palace made a bid worth £25m for the Senegal international back in 2020, and also made attempts to sign him before he completed a £30m move to Watford in 2019.

The Athletic add that Sarr has been scouted extensively by the Eagles, and he fits perfectly into the club’s recruitment strategy.

Therefore, it is certainly possible that Freedman was at St Andrew’s to hold further talks with Watford executives, rather than to see more of the winger in action.

So far this season, Sarr has scored one goal in three Championship appearances, while also providing one assist.

Crystal Palace would be a force if they signed Liverpool target

In our view, Patrick Vieira would have one of the best attacks outside of the Premier League’s top six if he managed to sign Sarr.

Crystal Palace already have the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Michael Olise, Eberechi Eze and Odsonne Edouard, so if the Senegalese speedster was added to the group, Vieira’s frontline would be in fantastic shape.

Additionally, Sarr is perfect for the way Crystal Palace play.

He is capable of being the finisher in a more possession-based style, but he can also stretch defences when required to play more counter-attacking, like the south Londoners did at Anfield on Monday.

If Crystal Palace get this deal done, their attack will be scarily good.
