Tottenham Hotspur have signed Djed Spence and managed to fend off interest from London rivals Chelsea in the race for his signature.

It was clear that Tottenham would be signing a new right wing back this summer with Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 system relying heavily on quality wing back play.

Matt Doherty found some form under Conte before a season-ending injury in April but may not be considered the long-term solution.

Emerson Royal was only signed from Barcelona last summer but it became clear that he just isn’t suited to playing as a wing back given his lack of end product.

Conte had to push for a new signings and he has now been given an exciting young right wing back in Spence.

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Djed Spence

Spence became Tottenham’s nailed-on first-choice target at right wing back months ago but finalising a deal wasn’t easy.

After some haggling with Middlesbrough, Tottenham finally got their man earlier this week as Spence was presented as a new Spurs player.

Spence, 21, is still raw; it’s only a year since Middlesbrough felt he wasn’t in their plans and loaned him to Nottingham Forest.

Spence played a key role in Forest’s promotion to the Premier League and has now landed his move to Tottenham.

Spurs will certainly hope that Spence is their right wing back for years to come but it could have been very different for the England Under-21 ace.

The Athletic claim that Chelsea make enquiries into signing Spence with the idea of making him an understudy to Reece James.

Thomas Tuchel has toyed with using James as a right-sided centre back in a three-man defence, so there may even have been opportunities for Spence to start at right-wing back for Chelsea.

Chelsea didn’t advance their move though, allowing Tottenham to swoop in and bring him to North London.

Spence was on the books of Chelsea’s West London rivals Fulham as a kid but his return to the capital takes him elsewhere.

Tottenham will now hope that Chelsea’s loss is their gain, with Spence primed for a big role at Spurs for years to come.
