Burnley have had a bid rejected by Royal Antwerp for winger Manuel Benson with Het Nieuwsblad reporting that the offer was deemed ‘far too low’.

Well, you can’t blame the Clarets for trying, right?

Benson has less than 12 months left on his contract at the Jupiler League outfit. So, presumably, Royal Antwerp simply have to sell the one-time Inter Milan target for lower than his usual market value.

But, at the very least, The Reds want to recoup the £2.5 million club-record fee they paid KRC Genk for Benson back in 2019.

According to Het Nieuwsblad, Burnley’s opening offer ‘did not come close’ to the £2.5 million marker. Clearly, the Lancashire outfit will have to dig a lot deeper than that if they want to take Benson to Turf Moor, contract expiring or not.

An explosive winger who can play on either flank and who takes a mean free-kick, comparisons will inevitably be drawn between Benson and a certain Maxwel Cornet. And with good reason.

It would be a major surprise if the former Lyon ace was still wearing claret and blue come September. Especially with a £17.5 million release clause in his contract, and a handful of Premier League admirers.

Could Benson be Cornet’s replacement? He’s certainly got the skillset, if not the same elite-level quality. The former Belgium U21 international has even been compared to Gareth Bale in the past, around the time that Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan side were reportedly expressing an interest.

“He is a very technical attacking player,” Patrick de Koster, Benson’s agent, once told FC Inter News.

“It is not easy to find players with similar characteristics. (Benson is like) Gareth Bale – quick, with a knack of finding the net. Manuel has a way of playing that resembles that of the Real Madrid player.”

Burnley have already signed two Jupiler League stars since Kompany’s appointment – Josh Cullen and Samuel Bastien – but missed out on two others; Bart Verbruggen and Jackson Muleka.
