According to the Telegraph, Brentford have held talks to sign Ben Mee, after Eddie Howe tried to bring him to Newcastle.
What’s the story?
Well, as the Magpies aimed to stay in the Premier League back in January, they attempted to sign experienced players who could make an immediate impact.
As a result, Mee ended up in Howe’s sights, and it was even said that Newcastle were prepared to double the 32-year-old’s wages in an attempt to lure him to Tyneside.
Ultimately, the Englishman stayed loyal to Burnley, and became Mike Jackson’s assistant after Sean Dyche was sacked.
However, the pair could not steer the Clarets away from the Championship.
Now, Mee could be making an immediate return to the Premier League, after his contract at Turf Moor expired.
The Telegraph believe Brentford have held talks with the experienced defender, although he has “options” as he considers the next step of his career.
We should discover what Mee plans to do relatively soon, however, as the Telegraph add that the centre-back is expected to make a decision before the season begins.
In his final season at Burnley, Mee made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals.
In total, he made 376 appearances for the Clarets.
Burnley must sign Ben Mee
From our point of view, we’re surprised Mee hasn’t already found himself a new club.
The Sale-born defender has proven himself to be a reliable and respected figure throughout his career, in which he has amassed 217 Premier League appearances.
Mee rarely let Burnley down, and we believe he would be a tremendous addition to Thomas Frank’s squad.
Of course, he will have to compete with the likes of Kristoffer Ajer, Pontus Jansson and Ethan Pinnock.
However, even if Frank doesn’t find a place for him in the starting XI, Mee’s experience and leadership abilities will surely prove invaluable in the dressing room.
Make sure to keep an eye on Mee’s situation, as he should join a new club soon.
