James McCarthy could leave Celtic with the midfielder considering his future amid interest from clubs in England.

Celtic lost a couple of midfielders earlier this summer with Nir Bitton and Tom Rogic both leaving the club on free transfers.

In came Aaron Mooy to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s midfield ranks, and that now looks to be an area of real strength for Celtic.

Mooy joins Callum McGregor, Yosuke Ideguchi, Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley and David Turnbull in an impressive crop of midfielders.

Even with those two departures, Celtic could still shed a midfielder – and it may well be McCarthy leaving the club.

The Scottish Sun report that McCarthy is considering his future and will make a decision in the coming weeks.

It’s suggested that clubs in England want to sign McCarthy and a Celtic exit is a real possibility.

McCarthy, 31, joined Celtic last summer as he finally fulfilled a boyhood dream.

The strange part was that Celtic gave McCarthy a four-year contract, which seemed like a gamble given his injury-hit time in England with Everton and Crystal Palace.

McCarthy made 22 appearances for Celtic last season but only nine of those came in the league and all of his appearances total 739 minutes – an average of around 33 minutes per appearance.

With Mooy now on board, McCarthy surely won’t be playing a key role under Postecoglou and an exit may now be on the cards.

McCarthy hoped to get his career back on track with Celtic, believing that the famous green and white hoops would bring back his best form.

That hasn’t really happened though and unless he wants to sit on the fringes of the Celtic side this season, an exit may be the best step for the Irishman, even if it hurts to leave the club he loves so much.
