According to the Evening Standard, Aston Villa and Everton have scouted Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, who is wanted by Tottenham.

What’s the story?

Well, it has been said that Spurs are in talks with Burnley over a deal for the England Under-21 international.

Antonio Conte faces competition from Crystal Palace and West Ham, who have also begun negotiations with the Clarets.

Elsewhere, Newcastle have also made contact.

Now, however, the Premier League trio should be wary of an approach from Aston Villa and Everton, who have spent time scouting McNeil in recent years.

The Evening Standard do not disclose whether the Villans of the Toffees have started talks with Burnley, although there is clear interest in the 22-year-old following a series of scouting missions.

McNeil looks set for an immediate return to the Premier League after suffering relegation to the Championship last season, and he is said to be keen on coming back to England’s top-flight.

The Burnley No.11 made 40 appearances in all competitions last season, providing one assist.

Aston Villa, Everton & Tottenham will be relieved they waited

In our view, Aston Villa, Everton and Tottenham will be pleased they didn’t sign McNeil last summer, after Burnley were relegated a few months ago.

As a result of their drop into the Championship, the Clarets are now willing to sell the £72,000-a-week man for £15m, after quoting Crystal Palace £30m for his signature in the summer of 2021.

That is a hugely reasonable fee to pay for a 22-year-old with 134 Premier League appearances to his name, especially as he still has two years remaining on his contract at Turf Moor.

Burnley are also thought to have an option to extend his terms by a further 12 months.

Make sure to keep an eye on this saga, as McNeil could join a new club very soon.
